The Engineering accreditation system is a system designed to train engineers in the true meaning of the word.
By reflecting the demands of industries in the curriculum, the system assures that the graduates are ready to be in charge of practical works. Furthermore, they will be acknowledged as a professional engineer in all parts of the world.
This system started to be implemented in the USA 70 years ago under the name of Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology(ABET). The College of Electronics and Information of Kwangwoon has introduced the system since 2002.
In this system, the accreditation is approved by the ABEEK after evaluating a department which has introduced the system and prepared for operation at least for 2~3 years.
This system started to be implemented in the USA 70 years ago. And Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, South Africa, Hong Kong, have introduced and mutually acknowledged the system. Japan join the 'Mutual Acknowledgement Agreement in 2004. Korea had undergone the preliminary process, and the ABEEK joined the Washington Accord as a regular member in June 2007, so that graduates who have completed the accreditation program will be acknowledged to have the equivalent ability in any country which has joined the Washington Accord.
The introduction of engineering accreditation system also has brought about many differences between the existing curriculum and educational contents and newly established ones. The students are encouraged to study not only major-related subjects, but also other basic subjects such as mathematics, physics and chemistry, so that they can make smooth cooperation with others with different majors in the future. And also, the system puts emphasis on learning the use of computers and the latest engineering programs, basic knowledge of current affairs related to law/economy/management, abilities for effective communication and international cooperation, and experiments and design. Though the system may lay a little strain upon schoolwork, it is regarded as a good system that enables students to adapt to the major field without difficulty after graduation. Especially, it is considered to be a pragmatic educational system because each subject has specific learning goals, and the educational methods(if necessary, the curriculum) are changed every year based on the evaluation of goal achievement through questionnaire focused on lecture evaluation at the end of semester.
The Engineering Accreditation System aims at training world-class engineers whose creativity in engineering field will meet the various demands of industry in the globalization and convergence era of the 21st century.
